TRENCH FIGHT SHAPES WELL. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 7.

Although the sky was clear there was a cold southerly wind to mako the conditions at Ricoarton this morning very unpleasant. Tho inside of the trial grass track was in use and, though in good order, it was slow, especially down tho itraight. Rockingham and Liane opened tho proceedings, doing half a mile in 54 3-ssec. Miracle did half a mile up the back in 51 2-ssec.

Sovereign Lady and Chidden were on terms all through a milo in 1.47 1-5, tho first half-mile taking 52sec. Petersham and Scrap Book took 1.12 for five furlongs. Counterflight followed Araboa over six furlongs, each doing 1.21. Sir Hugh, Happy Night and Bonnie Agnes covered five furlongs in 1.8. Trench Fight dashed over half a milo un the back in 49 3-ssec —a very smart effort. Diclate did half a milo in 54 3-ssec, going easily. Cottingham and Red Sun took 1,50 1-5 for a mile.

Settlement and Love Affair dashed down the straight in 51 4-ssec—a good effort. Elegy did a mile in 1.50 2-5. while Royal Limond and Streamline took 1.51 2-5. Cocksure, Sereamer and Solpit did six furlongs in 1.21. Silver Streak had Mount Val for a mate ovpr seven furlongs in 1.35 2-5. Strombili, Valantua and Mary _ Pratt were not hurried over five furlongs in 1.11 Concertpiteh and Grey Honour were on terms over seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5. a time which Rosseau and Swordsiick equalled: whilo Bluo Tiger and Master Musk took 1.36.

Giggloswick and Rose of Tralee .did seven furlongs in 1.36 4-5. Ponty and Wino, went freely while doing six fin-longs in 1.21 2-5, Big Dook beating Tiger Gain in a similar time.

Willie Win took 1.23 for six furlongs, alone.

Night,form accompanied Queen of Song over seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5. Pakanui and Golden Dart reeled off six furlongs in 1.19 3-s—a good gallop. Waitaka took 1.38 for seven furlongs. Bay Duke sprinted half a mile easily in 53 2-ssee., Amolita taking 53 3-5. Gramnian and Le Toquet took 1.8 for five furlongs. Davolo and Irish Piddle were well matched over six furlongs in 1.23 2-5. Catalogue and Old Surrey wore on terms over seven furlongs in 1.36. Palmyra beat Made Money over five furlongs in 1.6 2-5. and Bun Fight was slightly better than Mittio in 1.6 1-5.

Fiord beat Wine Card over six furlongs in 1.20 2-s—a useful gallop.

Mother-in-Law was well cleat of Laggard at the end of seven furlongs in 1.40 2-5.

Colombo easily beat Huapa over five fur longs in 1.10. Nocturnes galloped a mile and a-quarter at strong three-quarter pace.

THE JUMPERS. Golden Lap gave a good display over six hurdles

Toreador and The Surgeon set out to jump six hurdles. Thoy got into some of the obstacles and Toreador fell at the fifth. Clarion Call and Jolly Beggar were associated in a smart school over six hurdles. The pace was solid and both horses went well. Clarion Call proving him3olf a particularly fast jumper. Monastic and Corowa went over fivo hurdles, going round safely at a fair pace. Ethiop and John Charles were mates over six hurdles. They travelled at a_ fast pace and both jumped well, with Ethiop showing to special advantage over most of tho obstacles.

Maeailfein and Lucidas went once round tho schooling fences. Lucidas jumped well. Maeailfein hit tho first, fonce hard and blundered again at the second of tho double, but got round safely. The morning's work was completed with a school over tho steeplechase course. Irish Comet and Brigadore went once round, starting with a short run in to Cutts’s fence, which both jumped very well. Brigadore seemed to outjump Irish Comet over ono or two of the obstacles, especially Cntts's tho second time round, but Irish Comet was very safe. It was an excellent, exhibition of clean jumping by both horses.
