BRITAIN’S NAVY

guarantor of peace. REARMAMENT WELCOME. SPEECH BY PRIME MINISTER. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received July 6, 11.55 a.m.

RUGBY, July 5. The Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain), speaking at Birmingham, said: “Everyone knows that Britain’s rearmament will never be used for purposes of aggression. Everyone knows that even in peace time it is ever ready to perform those humanitarian functions which seem always to fall upon this country. In these last few weeks nearly 40,1100 Spanish refugees have been escorted to places of safety under the protection of the British flag. Before that lamentable affair comes to an end there will be thousands of Spanish women and children who have cause to thank God for the presence of British ships in Spanish waters. “I have been told by important representatives of foreign countries in the last few weeks that British rearmament is welcomed by every small nation ( because they realise, as do our Dominions, that a strong Britain is the surest guarantee to peace that can exist.”
