SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL.
The monthly meeting of the Alanehester Street School Committee was held last night, Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick presiding. Mr F. Gaze (headmaster) was in attendance. In his report lie stated that the roll stood at 388 with an average attendance of 348.6. During the past fortnight the half-yearly examinations had been taking place and good progress bad been shown. Arrangements were under way for a visit
of football and basketball teams from a Palmerston North school on Saturday. A letter from the Wanganui Education Board, in reply to the committee’s application for a grant to preserve the drill area, stated: “This work has been included in a list of ground improvement works submitted to the department for the purpose of obtaining a special grant. This list lias been arranged in order of urgency, and the department lias recently approved of a grant for the first ease on the urgency list. Although the board is unable to make known the order of urgency of the various cases, your committee may rest, assured that the board will endeavour to expedite the Government’s decision regarding grants lor the schools which arc regarded as of greater urgency, so that the work at your school may not be delayed indefinitely.” The chairman commented that the letter was a model of indefiniteness. The committee were reminded that the board’s architect was due to visit the school. and, on that visit being made, various matters would be discussed.
The chairman was authorised to arrange with a carpenter to make the structure necessary for the film machine, and the headmaster said lie hoped to secure films while in AVellington this month.
LYTTON STREET SCHOOL
The monthly meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee was held last evening, Air C. V. Jewell presiding. The headmaster (Air W. H. Smith) reported that the roll stood at 304, which was considered to be very satisfactory. Alinor sicknesses had not affected the attendance. The term examinations had been completed and the work of the scholars was quite satisfactory. The school was to be closed from July 19-23, inclusive, to enable the staff to attend a conference in AVellingtin. It was recalled that the GovernorGeneral had given the school a holiday and it was proposed that it be observed on August 4. It was decided to purchase two cords of firewood.
