MANAWATU MEETING.

REVIEW OF THE FORM. THE RANGER’S JUMPING. (By “Spectator.”) Tli© Ranger, who gave a beautiful clis play of jumping and was a l'ttlc unlucky, after being pacemaker all the way, to be beaten by Tangled in the Mannwatu Hunt Cup, has laecn entered for the Ilawkc s Bay Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Hlv Last Chance.

Dawning Light, the three-year-old Arousio filly, who showed great promise in her early racing, but has been difficult to train, will be given her last chance to make amends at the Rangtikei Hunt Club meeting, to be held this month, and if she fails to improve will be turned out. She ran unplaced in the Milson Hack at the Mnnawutu meeting on Saturday. Gainsford as Jump Jr.

Gainsford was the representative in the Manawntu Hunt Cup on Saturday of Mr K. McK. Duncan, who won the with R’sk in 1930 and Trouble in 1932. Gains* ford, who is a seven-year-old gelding by Gainscourt from the Field Battery mare Sea Battery, was prominent in the early stages of the race, but dropped back threequarters of a mile from home. Gainsary is another son of Gainscourt with which Mr Duncan had some success last season. A Forward Showing.

Making h's first since ho left Te Awamutu to join L. T. Wi.sons stable at Awapuni, Quadroon made a forward showing on Saturday in tbo Milson Hack Handicap, in which lie finished sixth, and will be benefited by the race. The son of N'gger Minstrel displayed promising form earlier in the* season, when ho ran third to Essex and Trench Fight in the Gieat Northern Derby, but he baa done little racing in the interim.

A Likely Improver. Thurwind, who fin shed fourth iri the Broadway Handicap at Awapuni, stays on well, but so far lias failed to reveal any form of note, although he ran a couple of fair races in nuddlc-distance hack events on file Auckland country circuit in the late autumn. An early improvement is likely. Needed a Race.

Miss Pango was evidently in need of racing condition when she tired five furlongs from home on Saturday after being one of the pacemakers in the Hunt Cup, which she won last year. She had been ofi the scene for several months until the Dan* nevirke meet rig, where she ran second in the Ladies’ Bracelet. At. Ellerslie last October Miss Pango won the Hunters’ Steeplechase, beating, among others, Irish Comet and King Rod. She is an entrant for the Ilawke’s Bay Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Failure of Lucidus.

Though rapidly improving over country, Lucidus, who followed up an impress ve success at Tauranga with a fourth in the W. G. Park Steeplechase at Te Awamutu, will need to be a better jumper to hold his own in the best class among seasoned horses. His third in the Awapuni Steeplechase was by no means a wonderful effort. Gay Rebel.

Gay Rebel, whose absence from the Palmerston North Handicap at Awapuni caused surprise after his recent good form, was riot engaged on the first day at Trentham and. as he has a cold, it will be doubtful if this rap'dly improving son of Gay Streak will be a starter at the meeting. Did Not Start.

Winsome Lu, a winner over s ; x furlongs at the Egniont meeting last month, ‘did not start, in the hack sprint event at Lu’a form has been consistent, resulting in a win, two thirds and one second plnc ng, and she may soon extend her record. This filly, who is also engaged in minor events at the Wellington meeting, is a. proved galloper in heavy ground and is worth keeping in nr’nd. From Ghokebore Stable.

Rival flit, the Winning Hit-Rivalry colt in the Uhokeboro Lodge stable, will Awapuni. In her last four starts Winsome have his first rare on the second day of the Wellingtin meeting. lie has been shaping in excellent stylo in his work, and will be a difficult horse to beat at bis first attempt. Circuit of Racing.

It was recently stated that the Wanganui Jockey Club intended to apply for March 17 and 19 as the dates for its autumn meeting in 1938. Some opposit’on has been expressed to these dates and the club will apply for February 17 and 19. The Tara-

naki Club is applying for February 3 and 5, and Egmont for the 10th and 12th of the same month, with W oodville anxious to get February 19 and 21 It has been suggested in some quarters that Woodvillo nrght agree to race on the 17th and 19:h, and if the dates were thus arranged these four meeting would make a circuit which should be very convenient for owners, providing, as it would, racing on every Thursday and Saturday in February. Clubs to Amalgamate.

Owing to inability to secure a track, the Opotiki Jockey Club hu/s decided to apply to the Racing Conference lor permission to amalgamate with the Bay of Plenty Racing Club, who notified the conference that it would agree to this step. In Southern Stable.

The well-known hurdler II gh Quality, who up till now has been a member ot K. Pope’s establishment, was sent to Christchurch last Thursday, and lie is to go into J. S. Shaw’s stable at Biecarton Shaw will have charge of the Acre gelding’s preparation for the Grand National Hurdles and other engagements. High Quality s? in first-class order and needs only firm tracks to show his true ability. It is the intention of his owner, Mr 11. A. Swaffild, to take him back to Auckland after the National meet ng. Likely Looking Novice. One of the likeliest* looking novices at El lei si ie is Rnjanya, who has come on fn*t during the past month. He is a ris ng three-year-oid by Acre from Diamond Queen, and comes from the family as Nancy Lee, winner of the A.R.C. Railway Handicap in 1928. Rajanya is particularly well developed, and although he has a? yet not been seriously tested he moves well and g ves every indication ot eventually making good. Pi ogress of IVlatoru.

Matoru, in the stable of J. S. Shaw at Riccarton, has been getting through useful work for some time past, and he is stated to have thrown ofi all effects of the back injury that made his spell necessary some months ago. Though not quite up to the class of Trench Fight, Matoru is a genuine racehorse when r.ght, and a successful return would add greatly to the strength of the handicap horses. Injured Horseman. The southern horseman, G. H. Humphries, is making steady progress from his injury and his affected thigh was removed from plaster of paris recently. An X-ray examination revelled that the bone had knitted well and it is hoped that Humphries will soon be able to get about on crutches. King Rey Well.

Since being' put on the easy list at Te Aroha lately, King Rey has freshened up considerably, and in the regular slow work now being allotted him is always anx:ous to increase the pace. On present appearances he should be ready to race iairly eariy in the new season.
