EUCHRE EVENING. (From Our Own CorrosnnndonL) APITI, July 3. The usual fortnight')- euchre was held on Wednesday evening, this time owing to counter attractions later in the week. There ww n fair attendance and the winners were Mr,- J. Smith and Mr I!. V. Stewart. Coir-olatiou prizes were wen by Mrs McLean and Don Slewart. Some very ftn-c cabbages were donated by Air Wild-bo-e and sold for the benefit of the school radio fund. Dnne’ng concluded the evening to music supplied by Mrs J. Smith. VALEDICTORY. Tn order to hid farewell lo Air and Airs 13. Kearney, who arc leaving the district to take up land near Danncvirke, their friends gathered on 'Thursday evening. Dancing was enjoyed to music (supplied by Mr R. Prince (saxophone) and Afr J. Hausen (pianist). During the evening Air S. Strahan prevented a handsome gift, to the guests of the evening on behalf of the company, cxnresring sincere regret at their dronrltire. Air W. J. Osborne spoke on Ix-luilf of the Football Club and Air W. McKenzie the Rifle Club. The. willing belli of Mrs Kearney on behalf of many organisations in Ihe district was referred lo and appreciation expressed. They were accorded musical honours. Ah- Kearney feelingly replied. expressing the hope that their old friends would not forget to visit them • . Danncvirke. METHODIST CHURCH.
Thursday last was a day of cxtrnonlinnry interest and inspiration to the local Methodists when social, business, and missionary activities cf church life were given emphasis. Soon after mid-day some 30 members of tlic quarterly board gathered in the spacious dining-room at the parsonage for luncheon provided by the ladies of the Church Guild. Following lunch, the circuit quarterly meeting was held, Rev. J. 11. Allen, of Fcilding, being ill the chair, representatives of Kangiwahia, Alangarimu, Ruahino, and Apiti congregations being present. A welcome was extended to Mr F. S. Guy, pioneer and builder of the Apiti Church. Voters of sympathy were passed to the family of the late Mr Fields (another pioneer of tills circuit), to Miami Mrs E. Clifton and Mr and Mrs Pearson (Ruuliinel. Reports of the work among young people were encouraging. The bal-ance-sheet showed a small debit balance. 'The Apiti Church is to be painted in the spring and several donations of paint were gratefully accepted. During the afternoon members of the Bible class assembled at the Hall and joined in games. Later some 50 young people and friends gathered for tea. A devotional period followed, led by Rev. R. Coombridge. A must inspiring address was given by Rev. J. R. of the local Presbyterian Church, and was much appreciated. Tn the evening a large ai-sembly representing many denomination’ and organisations met in the Methodist Church for a missionary rally. Rev. Belshazzar Gina, a Native Methodist minister ~of the British Solomon Islands, son cf a head hunter, told the story of bis conversion. He spoke of the joy of assisting others to a realisation of Christ’s love. He also pleased with song and instrumental items. Misses 'Taylor, Blanchard. and Whitehead, of Foildimr. contributed to the programme, nli-o Mrs J. Smith, of Apiti. Mr C. E. ’Taylor, of Fcilding, was in the chair, and appreciation was voiced b.v Mr R. D." Rose, of Rangiwaliia (circuit steward), and Rev. R. Coombridge, of Apiti PERSONAL. Hostesses for the next Women’s Institute meeting are Mesdames Mitnro, Doughty, Cun nod end N. K. Gould. The competitions will be a ptjpgy square, Scotch shortbread (special recipe), and best flower in my garden. 'There will also be the market stall. Airs Watkins has left to spend a few dayts with her invalid mother in Stratford. Miss 1). Prince is visiting relatives near Auckland.
