KIA TOA’S VICTORY.

STRONG OPPOSITION OVERCOME. Holding the territorial advantage for the greater part of the game, Jvia Toa nevertheless found Feilding Old Boys a hard team to'beat, the Palmerston North side winning by a field goal, an unconverted try and a converted try to a penalty. Until the last few minutes the possibility of the visitors pulling the game out of the fire was always in the air, but when Kia Toa gained their last try after a furious onslaught, and converted it, they finally decided the issue. The teams were:

Feilding Old Boys. —Dernier, Mullins, Bramwell, T. Aniadio, 11. Dewe, Pawson, J. Dewe, Edwards, Ewart. J. M. Finlay, McLeod, Eade, Knyvett, Ereeman, J. Finlay. Kia Toa. —O’Keefe, AY as ley, Simpson, Barnao, Jarvis, Thomas, AYiniata, Greatorex, Thorne, Latham, McKenzie, AViTliams, Beard, AVhyte, Garr.

After a series of exchanges, McKenzie was unsuccessful with a penalty kick 35 yards out near the sideline. Soon afterwards Knyvett took a penalty awarded for obstruction at halfway, Imt, although perfectly directed the ball fell under the bar. H. Dewe was dumped heavily and hurt a shoulder, but was able to play on. Feilding Old Boys were awarded another penalty from just inside Kia Toa territory, but Jack Finlay’s kick failed. Kia Toa’s backs all handled from a scrum, Simpson going round to take Barnao’s transfer, but Bramwell intercepted and broke away to send Aniadio on a thrilling dash for the line. Aniadio had injured an ankle early in the game with a speculation kick and Simpson just managed to haul him down, ten yards short of the line. Kia Toa eventually had to force down. N. Ball replaced Aniadio, who was limping, and the newcomer’s appearance signalled a very fast, exchange of attack and counter attack. The first spell ended with no score. On the resumption, Ball held 11. Dewe’s post at second five-eighths and Dewe had gone out to Aniadio’s position. Eade was caught off-side ten yards in his own half and five from the side-line, but McKenzie’s kick failed. The visitors’ backs handled in a line to Ball, who raced through but lost possession. Jack Finlay picked up in the loose and flew up the field, but gave a forward pass to Edwards with only ten yards to go and no one to beat. From five yards away H. Dewe hurled himself over the line following a line-out, but the corner flag fell. Soon after Janies Finlay struggled across the line among a mass of players but no try was scored. Then Barnao and AViniata broke away and went to tlio other end with a loose rush, and from a scrum Thomas drop-kicked a beautiful goal. Minutes later, half-way between midfield and tlio Ivia Toa twenty-five, Knyvett took a penalty kick and gained three points with a spectacular effort. A wild pass by Pawson let the Kia Toa men through and they were very dangerous for a period. Play see-sawed, however, with strong attempts by both sides to score. Then Kia Toa opened out in a forward onslaught and Latham capped it by scoring well in. Carr’s kick missed. Feilding Old Boys had to force, but then atta’cked. Kia Toa forced play back and Jarvis cut through for a fine opening, passed to Simpson, to AVaslev, who scored near the posts. Carr raised the flags, and there was no further score, the result being: Kia Toa 12, Feilding Old Boys 3. Mr C. Taylor was the referee.
