EXPORTS SHOW INCREASE. EXPANSION IN IMPORTS. WELLINGTON, July 3. Exports from New Zealand during May showed the usual seasonal decline, hut at £5,92-5.000 their value was £850,000 ahead of that for May, 1936. The increase was largely due to higher prices ruling for wool and butter. May’s figure was £2,477.000 below the record total of £8,402,000 for April. Imports during May reached the high level of £4,441.000, an increase of £1,195,000 over the value for May, 1930. For the 11 months of the production year exports reached the record level of £59 128.000, while imports were £46,041.000, making a total trade of more than £105,000,000.

Imports during -May wre valued at £4,441,000. an increase of £1 .195.000 over those for May, 1956, and £1,417.000 higher than those ‘or May, 1935. The figures for May for the last three years compare as follow:
For the five months of this year, ended May 3L, exports were valued at the high level of £.‘16.007,000, an increase of £0,597.000 over those for the corresponding period of 1930, and £12,725,000 in excess of those lor the five months of 1935. Imports continue to increase, those for ihe latest five months being valued at £21,707,000, an increase of £5,340 000 ove- imports for the corresponding period of 1930. and £7,405,000, or nearly 50 per cent., above those for the five months of 1935. The tables show that imports durthe latest 11 months are the highest for eight years, and are more than double those of the depression periods.
