BRILLIANT FUNCTION.
WOODFORD HOUSE BALL. LARGE NUMBER ATTENDS. A brilliant social function, the annual hall of the Manawatu branch of the Woodford House Old Girls’ Association. which was held in the A. and P. entertainment hall, last night, drew visitors from far and near. The ballroom presented a striking scene with the beautiful decorations and the many lovely frocks of the , ladies. Early in the evening two debutantes were presented to the president of the Manawatu branch, Mrs H. W. Petre, and Mr Petre.
Mrs Petre was wearing a distinctive frock of Alice blue and silver lame, with a sapphire velvet sash, and she had pinned a spray of orchids on her shoulder. She also wore a cape of pale pink ostrich feathers. Associated with Mrs Petre was the lion, secretary, Mrs A. C. Armstrong (Palmerston North), who had chosen a model frock of black satin with pink flowers giving a touch of colour at the neck-line in front.
Other members of the committee present were: Mrs M. C. Femvicke (Marton), who wore pink boucle and silver lame; Mi's H. H. Geisen (Feilding), rose pink ruched taffeta ; Mrs D. Guy (Koputaroa), black velvet and silver lame; Mi's P. Redma.yne (Halcomhc), navy blue taffeta with cherry contrast; Mrs C. 0. Walker (Pahiatua); Mrs L. B. Wall (Kairanga), wine satin b-eaute, brilliant and sapphire buckles; Miss M. Beckett (Marton) ; Miss H. Collinson (Palmerston North), black oloque relieved with midnight blue; Miss L. Miller (Palmerston North), violet georgette, neck-line studded with diamante; Miss M. Nathan (Palmerston North), pink crepe with diamante clips. Miss D. Fitzherlrert (Palmerston North), who lent valuable assistance with the decorations, wore black and white chiffon. These ladies deserve to be congratulated on the complete success of the hall. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. Mansford) were present, the latter wearing a smart frock of flame slipper satin.
LAVISH DECORATIONS. The hall was decorated in shades of pale blue, silver, and red and white (the latter two being the Woodford House colours), the end of it having been converted into a lounge which was separated from the ballroom by a trellis of greenery, with marigolds, camellias, narcissi and pink and blue flowers lending colour. At the lounge end of the hall silver stars gleamed in a wide band of blue sky, and a huge silver glitter disc with the letters “W.H.” super-embossed in maroon stood out effectively, a similar disc glistening at the other end' of the ballroom. An original effect was achieved by the four large windows outlined with trellises of bracken fern with scarlet berries under the sills. Through the windows could he seen an effect of starlit sky, the branches of a tree growing across it giving a realistic touch. Large silver pylons were arranged at intervals around the hall, and multi-coloured balloons clustered around silver discs. The red, white and blue decorations used for the Coronation Ball added splendour to the scene, and above the sound shell for the orchestra was the school coat-of-arms.
The lounge was comfortably arranged with easy chairs, and lovely bowls of canielhas, yellow chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, and foliage were set about with artistic effect.
Leading to the ballroom was a walk with brack-eli fern growing over trellis and bamboo at the entrance.
The supper tables were gav with vases of narcissi, marigolds, Iceland poppies, fluffy clematis and copper beech. THE DEBUTANTES.
