ITALIAN VOLUNTEERS
NO WITHDRAWAL INTENDED. UNOFFICIAL STATEMENT. RELEASE ONLY BY VICTORY. (United Tress Association —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright.) Received July 2. 10.15 a.m. ROME, July 1. Italy has not withdrawn her “volunteers” from Spain. This is made clear in an article in Popolo D’ltalia, generally attributed ,to Signor Mussolini. The article has created a sensation as it indicates a direct reversal of the earlier official announcements. It is interpreted as putting the end to all the pacification efforts in Spain.
The article says: “The Italian volunteers were not dispatched to Spain by the Government and tlie Government, therefore, has no power to recall them. Only General Franco, either before or after a victory, can free them from their imperative moral obligation. The Italian Government cannot nee them ancf, owing to the present circumstances, will not do it." The article, after alleging that Britain and France have helped and still are helping the Valencia Government, uuUo; "Everything that could be done on the British and French side to assure the victory of the Valencia Bolsheviks has been done. Everything that could be done on the Italian ami German side to isolate the Spanish conflagration has been done, 'me last uccisive word now belongs to the canon.”
