TYRE MANUFACTURE.
GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE. NO DECISION MADE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 2. A denial that the Government was in any way committed in the matter of the proposed manufacture of motor tvres in New Zealand was given by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. 1). G. Sullivan) in a letter to the Associated Chambers of Commence, which had made representations to him on the subject.
Mr Sullivan said that the industry had been gazetted under the Industrial Efficiency Act and applications had been received from practically ail th.\ major tyre manufacturers. All these involved various measures of Government assistance, including tariff protection against United Kingdom products. No decision had yet been made by the Bureau of Industry, and the Government was not committed to any one applicant of to any degree of tariff protection or even the investment of Government funds.
At a meeting to-day the Associated Chambers) reaffirmed its opposition to the granting of any monopoly in tyre manufacture.
