ASHHURST.
(From Our Own Corresnondent.) ASHHURST, July 1. Tho annual concert and dance of the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday ovening, when a- very large gathering attended. The concert programme was well received. Visitors v.evo meant from Bun-nythoi-[ie, Aokautere, Ralrnerston North, and Woodville. Those taking part weio: Rianoforte solo, Miss Kathleen Brewer; elocutionary, Miss Betty Murphy; song, Mrs 11. Claphain; playette by the local Drama Club, entitled “Scraps,” the cast being Mesdaines Anion and Coles, Misses Mclsaac, Grainrncr, Woodroofe, Wilkin and Mr L. Watt; violin solo, Miss Betty Claphain; song, Mrs D. Maul; tap dancing, pup"ls of Miss Juno Scott; elocutionary, Miss N’ola Tremewan; tan dance, Misses I. and N. Mclsaac; recitation, Miss Joan Curtis; tap dance, little Jov Burrell; musical rnoao*gue, Mi»3 Stevenson, of Woodville; Highland reel, pupils of Miss Scott; songs, Mrs Cameron; recitation, Miss Margaret Bryce; skipping dance, Miss Dorothy Carlson; the concluding item being a playette, “Dispensary,” by the Woodville members of the Drama Club, which caused much laughter. The (lutes of M.C. were carried out by Mr Brewer, who, on behalf of tho Ashhurst Institute, expressed their appreciation of the support, given by the perforators and those who had assisted in any way to make the concert such a success. Supper was handed round by a band of workers, after which the floor was cleared for dancing to rmisic by a professional orchestra. The winners in tho Gay Gordons were Mrs Groves and Mr J. Fox; and the Monte Carlo, Mrs Gay, and Mr M. Doreen. Mr 11. Bristow carried out the duties of M.C.
Visitors to the Methodist Parsonage recently were Rev. Mr Scriven and a member of the Solomon Islands Mission, the latter on deputation work, in connection with Tho ministry on the Islands. Mr Scriven held a lantern service in the church showing what is being done among tho peoplo of the Islands. The gathering was well attended.
Miss M. Bristow is on holiday at Cheltenham. Misses G. and E. Eaton have as their guest Miss Alma Cox, of Te Kuiti.
