MANAWATU MEETING

WINTER RACES TO-MORROW. REVIEW OF FIELDS. (By “Spectator.”) Provided tho weather holds, there is every indication that there will be a very largo attendance at the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter mooting to-morrow, when the programme will commence at 11.30 a.m. Tho appointments at the Awapuni racecourse arc in magnificent order, and the track has not been better this winter. It is anticipated that the going will bo splendid. There are eight races carded and three of them are jumping events, the chief one being the Awapuni Steeplechase. Form at this meeting may be some guido for horses which are engaged at the Trentham fixture next week.

Bate year tho Manawatu meeting was hold a fortnight after Trentham and a fortnight before tho Grand National meeting. Application has been made by tho club for May 14 next season, a week after the conclusion of tho Egmont meeting, thus taking tho place formerly occupied by the Wanganui winter meeting, which is now boing sought for the King’s Birthday lioliday. A brief review of tho fields for to-morrow is as follows: 11.30

LADIES’ BRACELET, of £75. One mile

Aube, a double winner at the Dannevirko meeting, where lie had two easy, but long overduo wins, heads the weights, and should go well. Air Laddie has returned to racing after an absence of over two years. Widden had a start in a similar event at Danncvirke. being unplaced, but All Spirit was just beaten by a head for second, and Tommy Atkins finished fourth. Cletrae finished fast in thud place in the Novice Stakes over five furlongs at Dannovirke, where Valroy, trained at Awapuni, was unsuccessful in the Ladies Bracelet. Ilcrangi and King Thomond are possibilities, but have done nothing to suggest winning form. The favourites may be: Clptrae, All Spirit, Aube. 12.5 FLAXBOURNE HURDLE HANDICAP, of £2OO. One mile and three-quarters.

Though lie has not, been very prominent, Valpai is a recent winner and, carrying 10.4, ran third in this event last year. Tout le Monde, on form, cannot fail to appeal, despite his failure to secure a placing at Waipa. High Grader has only recently returned to the active list, while Contact’s form has been inconsistent and, in fact, disappointing of late. Sporting Song has been very prominent in his engagements in steeplechase company this season and raced well at Wanganui, being unlucky when he lost his rider in the Century Hurdles. Most support will probably be forthcoming for:

Sporting Song, Tout le Monde, Valpai 12 44

The winner of this event last year, Miss Pango, who finished second in the Ladies’ Bracelet at Dannevirke, is carrying slb less this year. Tangled, though schooling well, lias not raced up to expectations of late. Dozio won at Hawke’s Bay, but the company was not strong. The Ranger jumps well, is improving, and will have benefited from the run he had in the Dannevirko Steeplechase. The public may prefer:

Miss Pango, Tho Ranger, Tangled. 1.23

AWAPUNI STEEPLECHASE, of £250.

Manawatu is a very unlikely starter in this event. Riotous ran solidly, though not brilliantly,' at Wanganui arid recently won the June Steeplechase at tho Hawke’s Bay meeting. Forest Glow wont very solid races in both his Great Northern engagements, hut without luck, though ho was not far away at the finish. He is a fit horse, despito reports to the contrary and a class ’chaser. Lwcidus won the Bay of Plenty Steeples after securing minor placings at Auckland. liluminagh is a good jumper, but was sore prior to racing unsuccessfully at Waipa. Drigadore would have been placed in the Wanganui Steeplechase but for falling two fences from homo when strongly challenging Clarion Call, tho winner. Wykcmist won in weak company recently at Hastings. Horses which appeal on form arc: Forest Glow, Brigadore. Lucidus. 2.2 PALMERSTON NORTH HANDICAP, of £250. One mile and a quarter.

Though tills field is not large, it represents good class. Taitoru’s first and second placings at Wanganui entitle him to the utmost respect. Ited Manfred ran second

in tho Ivebbcll Memorial at Koxton after winning tho hurdles on the eame day. Gay Boy is due for a return to winning form at any time, and Rona Bay lias only to reproduce her Otaki form to be dangcious. International ran two very good racea at Wanganui, where he was second laitoru in the Empire Handicap. Lc Grand has not produced his best form _ of late, but Gay Rebel is a northerner with a record of three successive wins in strong companv. Taillight lias been showing good form since he got on the winning list at Ellcrslie. The popular choice may be:

Gay Rebel, International, Taitoru. 2.41 MILSON HANDICAP, of £125. Sec fur-

Dawning Light 8 7 Airing ran a good second at Wanganui and should be prominent. Quadroon, now trained at Awapuni, is a likely sort, but may require a race. Flying Chief did not fulfil expectations at Wanganui, but is a good hack. Old Surrey is returning to racing after an interval sinco the Manawatu autumn meeting. Winsome Lu has been a consistent place-gutter, and To Iluia won nicely at Wanganui. The public may elect to give most support to: To Iluia, Airing, Old Surrey. 3.20 McRAE HANDICAP, of £2OO. Seven

Grand Jury 8 6 Winner of tho Connolly Handicap at Wanganui, Pukeko, who has shown good form in recent months, heads the weights in the IMeßao Handicap, and has earned his place. Notiuin won nicely on tho second day at Wanganui, and has gone on tho right way since. Red Manfred, International and Airing have earlier engagements, but may be reserved for this event. Catalogue has enjoyed a brief let-up recently, hut has come back looking very fit. He is a doubtful starter, but if he goes to the post will be hard. Lady Ina had a first and a second placing in good company at Egmont, but has not had a run since and may require a race to tune her up. Alby, too, is returning to the scene after an absence since his win at the Feilding Easter meeting. There is not much guide to the form of Grand Jury, who won the last Ashhmst Cup, hut lie is bound to be produced fit and well. Passion Flower was a winner at Hastings, and Corroboreo lias not met with success since his double win at the Manawatu autumn meeting. The favourites may be: Notiuin, Corroborce, Pukeko. 4.0 — BROADWAY HANDICAP, of £l5O. One mile and a quarter.

Trailer, who beat a good hack field over a mile when carrying 9.8 at. the Hawke’s Bay meeting, is topweight in this event, in which Corroborce again figures. Corowa, who did well at the Wellington winter meeting last year, may show an improvement- on recent form. Master Lirnond was unsuccessful at Danncvirko and Hunting Maid at Wanganui, where Chat ran a good race into third place in the Empire Handicap. Terry was unlucky at . Hastings. Dawning Light has been does not appeal. Warehi was second in a seven furlongs event at Dannevirke. .1 lie northerner, Tlmrwind, has been galloping well, and looks a likely sort. The publics preference may bo for: —

Terry Chat, Thunvind.
