MATCH AT AUCKLAND

MASSEY COLLEGE SUCCESS

Massey College, who defeated Auckland University College by 9 points to 8 in a Rugbv football match played at Auckland pn Wednesday, gained the Japanese Rose Bowl. Played throughout in dismal rain squalls, the game was a solid one, devoid of open back movements and crowdqd with heavy forward play. Massey College fielded a young pack, which played throughout with a dash and spirit that brought its reward. G. H. Terry, an ex-Auck-land University forward, and \v. G. Thurston, a trailer who followed up relentlesslv, were tho men who played a large' part in the agricultural college’s win. Thurston is a forward who neither gives nor asks for quarter. Terry, a young and hefty type, showed a dash and fitness that troubled his opponents. The full-lmcks vied in steadiness, says the Auckland Star. Bush, Auckland, rarely made a mistake, but he never attempted the spectacular. He saved several likely Massey College tries by his calmness. Where Campbell, tiie visiting full-back, attempted to field and run clear, Bush was content to leave the ball on the ground and kick it from there. _ Campbell handled cleanly, and kept liis feet in slippery conditions. H. Stewart, a former Ponsonby player, appeared to be holding the Massey College back-lino in position from the five-eighths position. His clever kicks into open ground, and the useful way in which he ran the backs into place were the right things to do on a wet day. Blyth, the Massey College half-back, was sound without being brilliailt/Rcid, of Auckland, overshadowed him on the day with some smart, tactical moves and a sound defence. Mulvihill and Cooney wero other Auckland backs to impress. Mulvihill saved two tries by fearless blocking. Auckland scored first, Reid opening the way, and giving Day, the winger, a run in. Bush kicked a fine goal. Then Keals scored for Massey College, hut Terry’s kick missed. Play was taken to'the line, and from a penalty Bush goalcd. Auckland held tho advantage for most of tho half. Just before the spell Terry kicked a straight goal from near half-way. University 8, Massey College 6. For the first ten minutes of the second half Auckland held the advantage. Most of the remainder of tlio spell Massey College spent in the University half. With Terry, Green, and Thurston leading, the visiting pack hammered on tho line. Drake, Morgan, and Armitago did their best for Auckland, hut Massey College held the advantage. Five minutes from the end Bush dived forward on the lml 1, but the Massey College pack rucked and hooked out. With only one Auckland back to stop them, the ball was passed through three men to Pierce, who had only to step across the line. The kick missed. Massey College 9, University 8.
