The chief actors in the international drama are Pictured here, Top left shows Indali co Prieto, loyalist Spain’s Minister of War, Navy and Army and Air Force, whose Government declared that the Deutschland was bon bed only after she opened fire with anti-aircraft guns on the loyalist aeroplanes. The Duetschland, pride of rebui l t Germany navy, is in the centre, with her commander, Admiral Hermann von Fischell, at right. Lower left shows Admiral Raeder. German naval commander-in-chief, who sped to Berlin for conferences with Herr Hitler following the incident. Julio Del Vayo, Spanish delegate to the League of Nations (lower right), was instructed by his Government to protest to the League that the German shelling of Almeria was an act of war. Scene of the bombing and of the port shelled in the German reprisal are shown by the map.
