MANAWATU NEXT FIXTURE
COURSE IN SPLENDID ORDER
(By “Spectator.”) Firmer this week tlia.n at any time during tho past two months, the Awapuni course promises to be in tip-top order for tho Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Including three events over fences, there are eight races carded on a very attractive programme, tho first race being scheduled to start at 11.30 a.m. No fewer than five Taranaki stables will bo represented at the fixture, at. which a number of northern horses will also be racing prior to fulfilling their engagements at Trentham. The Hawera mentor, J. Fryer, has Red Manfred and Lc Grand engaged in the Palmerston North Handicap, and International and Red Manfred in the Mcßae Handicap. These three horses are in good racing condition. They had an interesting gallop over five furlongs on the course .proper, with the pegs 30 feet out, at Hawera this week. The going w r as good, but not fast. International had a neck advantage over Lo Grand, with Red Manfred a similar distance away. The trio are booked to leave in a week’s time for Australia, where International is a Caulfield Cup prospect. Corovva and Master I/mond figure in the Broadway Handicap, the long distance I lack race on Saturday. The latter will have the services of C. G. Goulsbro, which will be in his favour. Corowa is very well just now, and big hopes arc entertained of him securing some stake money, especially at Trentham. where last July lie ran first, second and third. Tout le Monde, who ran a good race at Waipa, and who is included in the Flaxbourno Hurdles- field on Saturday, prefers the going firm. lie may possibly bo taken to "Australia with the others of J. Fryer’s team. Aube’s Late Win.
Aube, winner of flic maiden race and the Braclct at tho Bannovirko Hunt meeting and tonwc'ght in the Ladies’ Bracelet at the Manawatu meeting on Saturday, is a six-year-old gelding by Arausio from Te Aupaki, and therefore brothcrto Pakitere and half-brother to Toxeuma. His best previous effort was a second to War Lap in the Chamnion Hack Handicap, miles, at Pahiatua in March. Owner- Double.
Bred by licr owner, Mr M. 11. Tims, the tliroe-year-old liliy Te Monowai, who won the Trial Handicap impressively at Waipa on Saturday in her first public appearance. went to flic front at the end of two furlon/rs, and after that the race was hers, Te Monowai, who appears to have
a good future, is bv General Soult from To Ngeru, by Catmint from Lena Soult, by Soult from tlie Cuirassier mare Paulina, a descendant of tbo noted .Juliet family.
Besiege, another of I lie Soult horse’s progeny, completed a double at \\ aipa for Sir Tims, who has bred several good horses by General Lalour including Te Kara and Karapoti. Besiege is out of Rikoriko by Day Comet—Kilbeggan, by Kilbroncy—ltougo, a half-sister to All Red. Floodtirie's Mission. Tlicro is every probability that ldoodlide will contest the big spring handicaps in Australia. Should Floodtide make the excursion, he will bo in charge of bis trainer, R. Miller, tie lias 9.3 in the Metropolitan and 8.9 in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. All Irish’s Eligibility. All Irish was entered for tho Muriri Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next week, but when the handicaps appeared , his name was not included. An inquiry 1 was sent to Wellington asking for his weight, but the reply was that he was ineligible. The secretary was later informed that All Irish was a qualified hunter, and asked to forward his weight. A subsequent message from Wellington stated that All Irish, had been weighted at 10.9 for the Mariri Steeplechase. All Irish, with Black Marlin and Lord Val, was due to leave Auckland this afternoon for Trentham. A Long Spell. Oiicwhetu, winner of the Foxton Cup recently, and showing signs of a. return to his best form when he injured his back, is recovering, but is to be given a spell of three to four months. To His Liking. Tradesman had track conditions to suit him at the Waipa meeting, where his effort in finishing second lo Enge in tho Arapuni Handicap proved that the black gelding still retains bis speed. He was in tho centre of the field in the middle stages of the race, but finished well, though he had no chance with the winner. As Tradesman is not engaged at Trentham he is unTkely to race again until the Pukurunga meeting, to bo held in August. Brother to Floodtide. Although beaten into second place in tho Trial Stakes at Waipa, the turni shown by Mal-de-Mer was encouraging, lie began smartly, and though not suited by the going lie battled on weil under the conditions. As this brother to Floodtide is only a tliree-ycar-old and has done little racing, more is sure to he hoard of him when lie has had further experience. Annacourt Disappoints. When Annacourt was taken to the Waipa meeting the intentions were to take her straight to Treiitliaui, but her owndr changed his niuid as he was_ not pleased with her performance in the Woodstock Stakes. She is now back at Ellerslie, and a deiesiou was to he made to-day whether she will run at tho AN ellington meeting. Horses by Oration. Two new rising two-year-olds have put in an appearance at 'J.akanlui. One is a bay full-sister to Orate by Oration from a Jloogne —Country Picnic mane, and t lie other is a chestnut colt by Surveyor from a Uincquenood marc. The Oration liliy will bo trained by P. K. Pope, and the Surveyor coll by W. Townsend. The rising three-year-old liliy Lady Astrid, by Siegfried from Lady Quex, and the rising two-year-old coll by Oration from Biddy Comet have been placed in work recently at To Awumutu by F. Murtagli. Johnathan Schools. On her return trip from Auckland Mrs S. L. Parsons, of Wanganui, owner of Jonathan, paid a visit to Matamata to sou the Thespian horse schooled over the battens by Trainer W. J. McLean. Jonathan is reported to have given a satisfactory dlspluy of fast, clean jumping, and if ho goes oil tlie right way he should make an outstanding recruit for hurdling events. In the big sprint events in 'the Dominion and also in middle-distance .handicaps, Jonathan carried big weights with distinction, and at hurdling lie will have the opportunity of emulating the feats of Derby winners like Bon Revo and Red Manfred. Sea Wrack for Malaya.
'The Lackliain filly Sea AATack, who was sold by Mr S. E. Ilill to Mr L. V. O’Hara, of Perth, last March, did not remain longill Western Australia, as site left Fremantle a couple of weeks ago bound for Malaya. Air O’Hara took eight horses with him when he sailed on one of his periodical visits to Singapore, all selected for owners in tho Straits Settlement..
