GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI. SUMMER TRACK CONDITIONS. FAST COURSE LIKELY. (By “Spectator.”) Following upon a fortnight of drying •weather after the earlier 'rain, the Awapuni course was in perfect order this morning for gallops by candidates at the Manawatu meeting on Saturday. Provided rain docs not fall in the interim, the course is likely to be faster for tho races than at any winter meeting for years, as what may he described as summer track conditions will prevail. . . Quadroon (Nigger Minstrel —Liaison), Chat and Herangi were a trio ot early workers, J. Leach being upon Quadroon, Broughton on Herangi and Chisholm on Chat. They cut out six furlongs in 1-22. Skyful and Glentliawn, two novices at jumping, were schooled over a pan of pony hurdles. , , Sporting Gift (S. Anderson) covered halt a mile in 54 4-osec. Beaulack and Dunmanway, the pair of youngsters in W. Pine’s stable, ran two furlongs in 26sec on the trial Corroboree (Chisholm) and Taillight ( Broughton) ran six furlongs in 1.-4, the latter finishing just in front. Dawning Light, who bled ycsteidav, looked quite well this morning, and was given light work. ‘ Manawatu (McDonald) and Jbe Ranger (Thomson) were partners over a nnle in 1.56. . , , Happy Hunting (Broughton) took 42450 c ior three furlongs. Lady Ina (Broughton) and A alroy (Leach) ran six furlongs in 1.22 Gay Boy (Broughton) and Mastei Limond (Leach) covered half a mile in 53scc, but the latter was not moving well at the start, and swerved badly coming up the straight. Old Surrey (Broughton) in a good gallop just headed off Ihurwind (Leach) over five furlongs in 1./ 4-0 after a slow start by tho pair. Later in the morning jumpers were taken over a brush double on the course proper. Lord Quex Filly. , ,„ , Owned bv Air C. W . Boyd, of Palmerston North, a two-year-old Lord Quex fillv from Miss Winkle, out of Saint Helen, the dam of Helen, is being broken in to the track at Awapuni, named Helen Quex, she is a nicelooking youngster. Erination Turned Out. Erination has been turned out lie staked himself at the Waipa meeting on Saturday. Allegretto’s Trouble. Duo to a recurrence ot Ins old splint trouble, Allegretto is not an acceptor for the Wellington Steeplechase. Lucidus, Boughal, and Orac, of M. Carroll’s .team, will not be making the trip to Trentham, but Lucidus will iullil his Awapuni Steeplechase engagement. Riders For Wellington. The Awapuni horseman, W. JBroughton will liave tho mounts on Catalogue and Royal Record at the Wellington meeting, where C. lbomson will be riding Don Erma, Red Sun and Unexpected. McKeny,\e, Enge, Maori Song; H. Long, Young Paddon, Armacourt. J. Day will be riding Valpai at Awapuni and will go on to Trentham, where he will pilot Valpai in his engagements. Wellington Steeplechase. The two topweights- 'Judor and Vaipcen, remain in the Wellington Steeplechase in which 14 horses have accepted kmong the defections were Irish Comet, Erination, Allegretto, Royal Banquet, and Polydora. Thisy car s held is stronger by two than last year.
