“COLD AND COOKED”

DAME LYONS ON ENGLISH. In opening a fair at Beaconsfield in aid of funds for a memorial to the late G. K. Chesterton, Dame Enid Lyons recalled that Chesterton had described Australians as “raw and remote.” She added: “G. K. Chesterton, with

his love for argument, would have been disappointed if, in my tribute to him. 1 had been without an argument. I think it is just and feasible to say that the English are ‘cold and cooked.’ 1 think the best word with which to describe Australians is ‘tmmellowed,’ compared with old-world communities.” Airs Chesterton presented Dame Enid Lyons with two of her husband’s inscribed books, and presented Mr Lyons with two of Chesterton’s own drawings.
