FLIGHT TO NEW GUINEA.
MRS PUTNAM DEPARTS. “COLD IN THE TROPICS.” DARWIN, June 29. The American airwoman Mrs Amelia Putnam, continuing her world dight, took off a.t 7 a.m., and expects to reach Lae, New Guinea, in eight hours. Air force men at the directionfinding station made sure her radio was in perfect order. She was in comminution with Darwin at frequent intervals after her departure. Mi's Putnam, clad in an open blouse and brown slacks, remarked before climbing into the cockpit, “I was under the impression the weather would be very warm, but, believe me, I am finding it very cold in the tropics.” , From Australia Mrs Putnam s route is across the Pacific to Oakland, California, via Lae, New Guinea, Howland Island and Honolulu. SAFE ARRIVAL. FLIGHT ABOVE THE CLOUDS. SYDNEY, June 29. Mrs Putnam arrived a.t Lae about 3 p.m. the flight from Darwin taking 7 hoftrs 40 minutes and being mostly above the clouds. Mrs Putnam is resuming at dawn to-morrow for Howland Island. GLIDER RECORD. WOMAN’S WORLD RECORD. BERLIN, June 29. Fraulein Theodora Schmidt made a world record glider flight of 14 hours.
