MORE INTELLECTUAL COURT. Indications are that the King and Queen intend to give their Court a more serious anci more intellectual tone. Recent guests at Windsor Castle included the Poet Laureate, Jobn Masefield, and the poet, Osbert Sitwell. It is recalled that knighthoods were conferred on the novelist Hugh Walpole, the artist Muirliead Bone, and the musician Arnold Bax among the Coronation honours.
The King’s tastes run. to history, biography and political economy, and the Queen’s favourite authors include Hardy and Thackeray. She favours composers like Chopin, Mozart, Brahms and Schubert, and does not jazz. The Princesses are being brought up to appreciate good literature and music. Princess Elizabeth practises the piano daily, and is making rapid progress. She was very delighted when told that her parents would take her to Wimbledon this year. The King, who has played at Wimbledon himself, sometimes coaches his daughters, who play a lot of tennis.
