THE CIVIL SERVICE
REGRADING NEARLY READY. FIRST FOR EIGHT YEARS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 28. The first regrading of the civil servants of the Dominion for eight years will have been completed and be ready to put into effect in a few months. The last regrading under the statute was made in 1929, and the next was due in 1934. This was postponed, however, bv special Act of Parliament, because of the financial conditions existing at that time, and even after the present Government was elected it was not clear what would be done. Matters were held up for some time because the necessary authority had not been given by the Executive Council, and the future method of control of the service was for some time uncertain. , 1 After the appointment cf the new commissioners in August last, when Messrs T. Mark and J. H. Boyes took over control of the service, a decision was made to preceed with the regrading and the necessary authority " as gazetted in September. From that date both the commissioners have been touring the country, going into out-of-the-way places, in some cases, to expedite the work. The usual inspectors have also been on the road assessing the value of jobs, and the commissioners themselves have followed up their backblocks investigations by sittings in the main centres. At the same time the Treasury lias beer, at work preparing estimates or the effect which the regrading will have on the country’s finances.
