POLISH DEMONSTRATION.

PRELATE’S PALACE ATTACKED. REMOVAL OF COFFIN. LONDON, June 28. It is reported from Cracow, Poland, that the septuagenarian Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cracow, Dr. Sapieha, took refuge in a cellar when crowds, demonstrating against his removal of Marshal Pilsudski’s coffin from the cathedral, smashed the bishop’s palace windows. Achbishop Sapieha is unable to attend the Eucharistic Congress at Posen.

The Pope has ordered the Papal Nuncio to use his discretion and settle the dispute. As a result of this the Papal Nuncio visited King Carol of Rumania after his arrival at Cracow.

Violent demonstrations were staged outside the palace of the Papal Nuncio, thousands of people demanding the immod ate dismissal of the Alehbisnop of Cracow, for removing the heavy silver coffin containing the remains of Marshal Pi.sudski from the Tomb of Kings in the cathedral in defiance of the President of Poland, it was reported from Cracow on Friday. The coffin was removed when the Arciib’shop learned that King Carol oi Rumania ro to place a wreatn on Pilsudski’s tomb. King Carol was due to arrive at Cracow on Saturday. It w f as understood that the Archbishop’s decision was due not only to the fact that the King is not a, Roman Catholic, but also to the facts of his private Tfe. Fifty thousand Pilsudski veterans demanded that the cathedral should be declared State property. the Archbishop punished, and the Concordat between the Vatican and Poland revised to reduce the powers of the Church.
