EMPIRE NEWS

CABLES VERSUS WIRELESS. CHEAPER DISSEMINATION ESSENTIAL. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 8, 1.25 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 7. . The transcript has been issued of the Empire Press Union’s deputation to the communications sub-committee of the Imperial Conference on November 19. Mr Robert Donald urged that the competition of speedier cables with wireless would have to be considered. He understood that a company in a few years would have a quick-loaded cable to Australia. He believed that a serious cut in the cable rates was contemplated. Therefore, the Post Office was faced with the dual problem of the competition of loaded cables with its obsolete Atlantic cables, and the competition of its wireless against all cables. Mr Bruce intimated that his Cabinet was considering landing charges in Australia, under which there was tiio anomaly that all cables were chargeable, but not all wireless. Ho admitted that a cheaper dissemination of Empire news was essential. Mr L. C. Amery promised sympathetic submission of the views to the Postmaster-General. —A. and N.Z. cable.
