SECESSION QUESTION.
AFRICAN PREMIER’S STATEMENT. CAPETOWN, April 28. During the Budget debate in the Assembly, General Hertzog made an important declaration op the secession question. He said that personally ho thought so far as the Union of South Africa was concerned secession would bo a flagrant mistake and be a national disaster if caused by one section, either British or Dutch, imposing its will on the other, He d>d not fear that secession woujd arise so long as each section fefrpiped from asserting its superiority or dominance over the other. General Ilerlzog urged that pq attempt should be made uy either section to use the British connection to establish such superiority. Referring to the Budget proposals, the Premier favoured a policy of Government protection of local industries and the opening of markets for South African products. —Reuter.
