Mr H. J. Worthington, of the local office of tho Justice Department, who has been on annual leave, returned from tho north yesterday an<l has re-entered upon his duties.

Mr J. P. S, Clouston, of Devonport, who was to have succeeded Mr D. M. Mclntosh as postmaster at Dannevirke, has been re-transferred to Rotorua. The vacancy about to occur at Dannevirke will bo filled by Mr S. J. Bolton, of Featherston.

Mr A. J. McLeavey, a member of tho clerical stuff of Messrs Gifford Moore, Ongley and Tremaine, has accepted a positiou with the firm of Alessre Groker and McCormick, New Idymouth, and will enter upon his new duties in about ten days’ time.

Ur. O. Chilton, Professor of Biology at Canterbury College, who has been incited to act as president of Section D (zoology) at the meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the advancement of Science, to be lield next year at Perth, has declined the position. Mr A. M. Purcell, of the relieving staff of tho Bank of New Zealand, who has for the past twelvo months been stationed in Palmerston North, was on Tuesday transferred to Napier. Mr Purcell was last winter a prominent member of tho Old Bovs’ Football Club, securing representative honour*! on two occasions. Professor J. B. Condliffe, who holds the chair of -Economics at. Canterbury College, bus been grunted leave of absence by the Board of Governors of the college from June 9 to August 5,1 o enable him to be present at a pan-Pacific Conference, to be held in Honolulu in July to discuss racial problems. Messrs K. Eglington and W. Carruthers, delegates from the Manawatu Rugby Union, left this morning for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union which opens at Wellington this afternoon, Mr A. Hannav, chairman of the local union, will, business permitting, proceed south this afternoon in order to attend to-night’s meeting and that of tho minor unions to-morrow morning. Tho death took pluce at Palmerston North on Monday of Mr- Bruce Withers, of Union street, Foxton. The late Mr Withers was 69 years of age, and had been a resident of long standing in Foxton, having resided there for over 40 years, arul being well and favourably known. Deceased leaves a family of two sons and five daughters: Messrs Joseph Withers (Wanganui) and Vincent Withers (Foxton); Mrs Belvie (Wanganui), Mrs A. Osborne (Foxton), Mrs F. Watson (Foxton), Mrs W. Wallbutton (Foxtonf, and Mrs W. Rout (Eketahuna). Mrs Withers predeceased her husband in February of this year, and one son (Mr Alf. Withers) and ono daughter (Mrs A. Dudson) predeceased the late Air Withers, Tho funeral took pluce j esterday afternoon.—Foxton correspondent.
