THE ELECTIONS.

The local body elections lield yesterday in Palmerston North were chiefly remarkable for tho fact that, in not a single instance, was a candidate who sought re-election defeated. Despite the absence of a contest for the mayoralty, the polling, due to the half-holiday issue, was large and, generally speaking, the elections were keenly fought. Tho return of the Mayor unopposed and of the eight councillors who sought re-election may justly be taken by Mr Nathan as a vote of confidence in tho work of the past council. For the remaining seat, the electors have chosen in Mr D. W. Low a gentleman who should prove a most able and useful councillor. Cr. Fitzlierbert, in heading the poll, may also be justly proud of the honour accorded him by the burgesses, and, in ascribing this to the stand he maintained in connection with the controversy over the site of the war memorial,' he was no doubt correct, for a great number of residents appreciated and remembered his live interest in this matter. The return of Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., at tho head of the poll for the Power and Hospital Boards is evidence of the very large measure of confidence he enjoys at the hands of the people of Palmerston North, and the same remarks apply to Mrs L. A. Abraham and Mr F. Pycroft for the Hospital Board, and Mr M. A. Eliott for the Power Board. The result of tho contest for the local and district seats on the ■ Wellington Harbour Board was not surprising, it being the general opinion that the sitting members, Messrs Cobbe and Cohen, would be returned as a result of their good work in the past. In view of the fact that, generally speaking,_ Palmerston North possesses an experienced council, a record of useful service in the very best interests of the town should lie to its credit when its term of offices expires in 1927.
