ELECTION CAMPAIGN

OPENED IN NEW SOUTH WALES. THE GOVERNMENT’S TOLICY. SYDNEY, April 23. Tho Stato election campaign was opened at Mossvalo by the Premier delivering a policy speech which for the first time in the history of the State was broadcasted by wireless. After reviewing the past performances of the Government, by which he suid the accumulated deficit left by the Labour Government of £3,578.268, had been reduced by over £1,000,000, lie claimed that as the result of his administration there would he no need during the coming year to make an appeal on the local market for money. The Government intended to keep off the money market until the interest rate was reduced. The policy was not one of cheeseparing,., but one which would ensure the maximum good with the minimum of expenditure There would bo a further reduction oi taxation amounting to £500,000. There would be a vigorous and sustained effort to increase land settlement and develop the State's power and resources. He added that a strenuous effort would be made to wipe off the accumulated deficit and that there would ho a further reduction in the Stato income tax. He also outlined a scheme of prison reform by which the prisons would bo made self-supporting. He said a referendum would bo taken on the question of the abolition of tho Upper House, and membership thereof, in any case, would be restricted io a period of years. He concluded by referring to the number of strikes in tho State, and said this must stop. If tho law at prosent was not- able to stop it tlio law must be tightened up in order to protect the majority of the people in the Stato from the machinations of a dangerous minority. Nominations for the State elections closed with ulmost 300 candidates for 90 seats. The parties contesting are:—Na-tionalist-Progressives, Coalition Party, Progressive Party, Labour Party, Protestant, Independent Labour Party, Young Australia Party; also Communists, besides several Independents.—Press Association.
