LABOUR AND RUSSIA

LEADERS SPEAK OUT,

LONDON, April 11. The Anglo-Russian Trade Unionists’ Conference reports having “reached an agreement on all essential points and principles tending to remove all barriers and make an international movement possible. The decisions will promote unity among the conflicting sections in many countries, resulting in a degree of international unity that hitherto did not exist.” It is understood that tho conference agreed that the next step should be to establish a joint commission approved by both Internationals. The Russians left the conference smiling, and were profuse in fraternal salutations.

Trade Union leaders outspokenly opposo the Auglo-llussian effort, pointing out that an attempt to w r eld the English and the Russian trade union movements would only split the British movement.

The Russian workers’ aims are condemned by organised British Labour. Mr Cramp (Railwaymen) says the vast majority of European trade unionists oppose the Red International’s political influences.

Mr W. A. Appleton, secretary of the General Federation of Labour since 1907, says that the British workman is “fed up” with Russia, and does not care a straw for her, especially when British industry is slipping into a terrible position, involving hardships worse than tlios6 of the 18th Century.
