CHARGE OF THEFT.
“CONFIDENCE” TRICK ALLEGED MAN BROUGHT 1 FROM AUSTRALIA. A young man named Denholm Gillespie was charged at the Police Court this morning before Mr A. Hannay, J.P., that, at the Esplanade. Palmerston North, on February 24 last, he stole £73 from the person of Stanley Gibson.
Accused opposed the application of the police, represented by DetectiveSergeant Quirke, to remand him until Friday. He asked for a further week’s remand but the police application was granted. It is alleged that accused is one of a party said to have worked a “confidence” trick at the Esplunade in February last and afterwards disappeared to Australia. The Commonwealth police were advised of the circumstances and accused was sent from Australia on the Ulimaroa, which arrived yesterday at Wellington, where he was arrested by Detective Russell, of Palmerston North, and a Wellington detective.
