RACING PERMITS. ACTION BY CONFERENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. The following telegram lias been sent by Sir George Clifford, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, to the president of the Taumarunui Racing Club and secretary of the Waipa Racing Club:—-“You are doubtless awaro that to hold a race meeting under an allotment by the Minister of Internal Affairs, and without the approval of the Racing Conference or its representative would be contrary to the rules of racing, and would subject your club to such penalty as the conference might elect to inflict. I have already protested us strongly as possible against the independent and autocratic action of the Minister in taking action overriding the laws and customs regulating the sport of racing. If your club should desire it I will, nevertheless, and under protest, give a formal approval to thislicen.se. This I would do only for the following special reasons:— Firstly, the illness of the Prime Minister which so gravely concerns the country, Cabinet and ourselves, and deprives us of our natural appeal from an usurpation of ministerial authority; secondly, the Racing Conference is itself nearing the end ol its authority, its successor being now in the process of election; thirdly, it is fitting that this grave question of the government of the turf should be ■ cult with dispassionately by the new conference which will meet in July.George Clifford, President Racing Conference.”
The following replies have been received :
From the president of the Taumarunui Racing Club: —“I have to thank you for your night telegram and note contents. My eiub is very anxious to have an extrt day owing to its financial position and I would esteem it a favour if you will approve of the license and grant my club a dato to race, say, the 23rd or 27 of May. Please advise.—Wackrow.”
From the Waipa Racing Club:—“My club regards the action taken by you as a protest against the Minister’s action in over-riding the rules and customs regulating racing, and has no reference to this club’s position in the matter. We do not wish to take advantage of the special circumstances mentioned by you, but in view of our financial position would iippieciate your approval provided it does not prejudice Waipa’s standing with the conference .—Wynyard. ’ ’ The president of the conference has sent the following reply to the Taumarunui and Waipa clubs: —“For reasons assigned in my telegram of the 23rd inst., and under the protest stated therein, I give formal approval under part 3, rue 14 of the rules oi racing for your club to hold a oneday totalisator meeting.—George Clifford, President Racing Conference.” The date allotted for the Taurnnrunui Club’s meeting is May 23 and for the Waipa Club’s meeting May 27. TROTTING DISQUALIFICATIONS. TARANAKI SENSATION. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 27. As briefly telegraphed yesterday, disqualifications of three years in each case have been imposed on Harry Daniel, of Waverley, and upon the black gelding Sweet Prince hv the judicial committee of the Taranaki Trotting Club. This step is a sequel to an incident at the Taranaki Trotting Club’s annual meeting at New Plymouth on Saturday, April 18, when Mr T. H. Davey, stipendiary steward, questioned the identity of a horse entered as Tekapo, which was saddled up for the Moturoa Handicap. An inquiry was held and adjourned, but the horse was not allowed to start, being held by the committee. . In reporting the findings the judicial committee of the club states: “After deliberation it was resolved unanimously:— (1) That Harry Daniel, of Waverley, he disqualified for three years for nominating the black gelding Sweet Prince by Sweet Patch—Princess Ena, as Tekapo, by Brooklyn Nancy—-Un-known (for two events) to be decided at the Taranaki Trotting Club’s meeting on April 18, 1925. The finding also alleges false statements by Daniel. (2) That the black gelding Sweet Prince entered as Tekapo be disqualified for three years. (3) The committee would point out that from the evidence and information supplied by the Association it would appear that one, Kernsk, or Ohangai, was the registered owner of Sweet Prince in 1918. Kernsk sold the liorse to J. F. Bourke, of Alton, but the transfer was not registered with the association as required by rule 153. Bourke passed the horse to Archie Cameron (since deceased), ot Eltham, hut no transfer of the registration followed. In the late Cameron’s name Sweet Prince ran unplaced in the Stratford Handicap at the M arinate Plains meeting on Easter Monday, 1921. Then the horse was sold to Charles Richards, of Kakaramea. Richards sold to H. Morrison, ot Waverley, and then Harry Daniel, ot Waverley, bought the horse from Morrison. No attempt was mad© hy either of these individuals to . effect registration with the association. There is not the slightest doubt that this horse was the one nominated by Daniel ns Tekapo. From authentic information supplied by the Trotting Association, Tekapo was purchased from Scott, of Kai Iwi, and taken to Queensland by one Ireland, ill 1914, and there is no information that the liorse was returned to the Dominion.
