VEAL FOR ITALY
SHIPMENT FROM GISBORNE.
POSSIBILITIES OF TRADE.
The steamer Gallio is taking- from Gisborne a shipment of frozen veal and beef for Genoa, this being the first shipment ever made direct to Italy from Poverty Bay. There is a possibility that the trade may grow to fairly large proportions and be a decided benefit to the district. Speaking on the subject of meat exportation to Italy, a Gisborne business man with a. wide knowledge ot the meat trade, said the Gallic would bo taking a large number of carcases of frozen calves to Genoa. This was the first occasion on which New Zealand had entered the trade, and, as tiio calves which were. cent away were those which had been culled out of the herds, the trade would benefit the district in more ways than one. Only a few hundred calves were being sent out of Poverty Bay in the present shipment but a large number were being shipped from Hawke’s Bay. The purpose for which the frozen calves aro used is rather of interest. The “roust beef of Old England’’ has its counterpart in Italy in the shape of a large sausage which forms a sort of national dish. This sausage is manufactured from veal, beef and pork and includes in its composition a large amount of pork fat. Italy, therefore, buys the heaviest weight pigs and also requires large numbers of frozen calves and seoond grade beef .'or her sausage. For a time the Argentine tapplied many of the calves required in the trude but her chilled beef trade has grown to such proportions that it does not now pay her to kill the calves. Uruguay and Paraguay both hava large herds of native cattle and the practice there is to kill oil' many of the female calves which eventually find their way to Italy, Frozen veal from New Zealand has always commanded a fair price on the English market, but much that was shipped to London was eventually reshipped to Italy. The Gallic is the first boat to take a direct shipment and should the prices warrant it further shipments will, no doubt, b 3 made direct to Italy.
