RESISTANCE TO THE POLICE. CAPETOWN, April 20. An ugly situation developed in the Bloemfontein native location when an attempt by die police to interfere with the native beer drinking was resisted by a mob of 4000 natives and the police compelled to retire. In the evening there was quiet, but the city is still under police and civilian patrols. Fifty native ringleaders were arrested today. The casualties among the natives 60 far as they aro present known, include four killed and three seriously injured. Two Europeans were seriously hurt. Later details show that a ; peeial force of police, armed only with pick hnndles, was sent in the location to disperse the natives. A reserve force was stationed outside, armed with rifles and fixed boyonets, but the strictest orders were issued that no rifle was to be fired without distinct orders. The police met with a stout resistance and many were injured by flying stones. The reserve was brought in and in the end was forced to fire —A. and N.Z. cable.
