SHANNON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent). W. J. Fcetham, employed at the local railway station on behalf of tlxe Public Works Department, met with a. nasty accident on Tuesday morning, lie was pulling some trucks along when he was caught between a trqck and u motor lorVy. Medical attention was soon secured when it was found he was severely hurt. The unfortunate man was conveyed to hie home. It is pleasing to note that the flower show is once more to take place locally. Before the war this was an annual event and large numbers of splendid exhibits always came to hand. As tho population of Shannon has grown much since those days, this event should be well worth tho attention of all flower lovers. The Shannon Golf Club had ideal weather for the opening of the season on Saturday. There was a large attendance of members. Approaching and putting competitions were held, the prizes being presented by Mrs Johnstone and Mr Johnstone (president). Miss Sinclair won the approaching and Mr Moody the putting. During the afternoon a sumptuous afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. Several inter-club matches will be arranged during the season nnd a medal match will be held every month. The ludder will be ready at the week-end. Judging by the interest taken on opening day the seaeon should be a prosperous one. Shannon nnd Foxton League teams played a friendly game on the local grounds on Saturday, Shannon being the victors by 15 points to 14. Mr R, Terry controlled the game. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tueedav morning. Present: The Mavor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs Hyde, Gunning, Butt and Curran. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr Christian, applying for renewal of lease of council’s section.—Granted. From A. F,. Hyde, applying for building permit.—Granted. GENERAL. It was moved by Cr Hyde: That the present means of getting over the FoxtonShannon bridge by workmen going to their work causes much delay and inconvenience, not to speak of loss. It is therefore desirable that a. swing bridge should be constructed for foot passengers. This could be done at a very small cost, Then length would be from the existing span to the bank.—Carried, the resolution to be forwarded to tho Main Highways Board. At the close of the meeting the Mayor thanked the council tor their co-operation and courtesy during the past term, lie said that in elections probably things were said that ought not to be said in the heat of the moment, but he was glad to say that in Shannon these things were very soon forgotten and all worked in harmony for the good of the town. lie hoped, after the buttle was fought and won, they would bury all their differences like good sports and do their utmost in the interest of the town.
