CARRIAGE OF GOODS

DIS'CUSSED AT CONFERENCE. CARRIERS AND RAILWAY DEPARTMENT. A conference took place in Palmerston North last evening between representatives of the Ruilway Department—Messrs A. McNeil and G. T. Wilson (business agents for tho commercial department), J. O’Shea (statiomnaster), J. G’arnaehan (chief clerk) and F. G. Craig (chief goods clerk —and representatives of the newlyformed Manawatu Carriers’ Association, Lta.

Discussion took place regarding the question of co-operation with thp department, tho advisability of feeding the railways and not entering into competition therewith; tho deletion of tho overlapping process which has been in existence, and the question of parcels delivery. The association made very eulogistic references to tho great improvements and facilities for carriers that Mr O’Shea, the stationmaster, hud brought about, and it was ascertained that ho has in view further improvements and facilities for the carriers of the Manawatu.

It was recognised by tho meeting thut Palmerston North was tho most suitable centre for tho receiving and distributing of goods from the outlying districts. The result of the conference was that a satisfactory working basis was arranged between the two parties represented.
