PRIMARY SCHOOLS
TAONUI SCHOOL. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the chairman (Mr R. A. McFarland) of the Taonui School Committee, presented to tho meeting of householders on Monday evening, was us follows: —“Tho committee met on various occasions when required during tho year, with a good average attendance of its members. Wo commenced our year’s working with a credit balance of £1 8s 8d and finished with a credit balance of £l3 7s 3d. Our total receipts for the year amounted to £43 7s 9d, of which £37 was received from the Education Board. Our expenditure amounted to £3O 0s 6d, the principal Items being school cleaning, hrewood and repairs to buildings, fences, etc. In regard to our substantial credit balunce, thanks uro due to the members of the committee who on various occasions as required gavo their time and assistance to fulfil various duties requiring attention in connection with the school. Our tenuis court at tho buck requires redressing and it was with this end in view that the committee sacrificed so much of their time in order to conserve funds for this purpose. We have reason to congratulate ourselves - as parents in regard to our teaching staff, Mr MucEwan and Miss Fowles. The results attained at this school during the past year speak in glowing terms of the capabilities of our teachers and 1 understand that the passes obtained in this school compared more than favourably with the various surrounding schools. Of the five pupils of this school who sat for tho pruliciency examination three obtained proficiency arid one competency with one failure, the latter pupil being at a considerable disadvantage through being absent for a considerable time through illness. In addition to the above one of the pupils gained the national scholarship, being only 12 years of age. When we take into consideration that many of the larger schools have a teacher assigned for euch standard, while Air MacE.wan’s work is extended over four standards, we must admit that the results are very satisfactory. Our school, like other schools, will be at a considerable disadvantage this year through being closed so long owing to tho infantile paralysis epidemio. This has been most unfortunate for all concerned, as thi3 years work is almost one term behind. While the teaching of lessons at home to a certain extent has Izeen a help, yet to my mind it is a failure compared with the teaching at school in the ordinary course of events. My sympathy is with our teachers in this unfortunate state of ail airs, yet I feel with every confidence that, at the end of our present year’s working, our school will again compare favourably with other schools. I have also pleasure in reporting that our school this year wag awarded first prize environment certificate for its neatly kept surroundings.
The following comprise the new committee elected fbr the Raurnai School at the annual meeting of householders: Messrs B. Rockett, L. Edwards, R. McDonald, W. Howell, W. 11. Lucas (reelected chairman and secretary). Tho following were elected to the Utuwai School Committee: —Messrs J. Enright, R. Batcliclar, B. M. Flavall, J. C. McEwen, J. A. Coup (chairman and secretary).
