SKELMORLIE DISASTER.

RESULT OF TORRENTIAL RAINS. LONDON, April 20. The Skelmorlie disaster, by which five people lost their lives, was due to tho carrying away of 30ft of dam in consequence of torrential rains raising tiie level of the water in the reservoir until the danger point was reached. Fortunately, the bulk of the water invaded the roadway, thus missing many houses. Not a vestige of one house remained after the deluge had passed, and three children playing outside were killed, one body being carried over gardens and roads to tne sea, where it was found half buried in sand. A motor bus, full of passengers, ran into the flood, but by turning got clear in time.—A. and N.Z. cable.
