Walking Contest.

The first annual walking contest held under the auspices of the local branch of the Y.M.C.A. was got olf to day in favorable weather. A big number of people assembled to see the start, this taking place; at the Post Office. There were ten competitors (a smaller number than had been looked for) and they were pot awav by Mr Hodder at 10.10 o clock. The men all started together. The course was to Longburn and back, the distance being about eight miles. Walking on the footpaths was forbidden, the rule being "keep to the road." The first man turned up earlier than was expected, at 11.80 o'clock, and was received with applause by the crowd awaiting him. The first three men to arrive were: 1, D. Pears, time lhr 20min; 2, J. Archer, time lhr 24min ; 3, H, Haycock, time lhr 30min. The others came in at intervals. It is proposed to hold another race m two months' time, when it is expected th*t there will be a larger field.
