RACE PURITY.
j Tin; leading journals of the colon}' are very pronounced in their views as to the desirableness, cf maintaining race purity, and the unanimity thus existing should bp the mean* of arousing a healthy public opinion upon the subject. In discussing the question, tinOutgo Daily Tsitnes, oneof the most outiipclkea and rao.4 vigorously conducted newspapers m.ilif colony, says-,—'"Mr Seddon believes—and, from what we ran judge, quite truly—that British statesmen have not yet realised the aspirations of the colonists upon this subject; they hare not appreciated the depth of the colonial sentiment m favour of the retention of the colonies as distinctly British countries. But, a* Mr Seddon urges, the question is not colonial merely ; it is Imperial. ThrowAustralia end New Zealand open to unrestricted imtnijjration, and m a generation, if the same conditions eon. tinned, these colonies might hold an alien population exceeding in number the population of British descent I Really, however, tht> question is one upon which the colonies must be truste<l, within certain limits, to act for themselves; they a:re best qualified to judge for themselves what policy is most likely to advance the development of the white race now resident in them and to maintain the standard of living. Therefore, it behoves the Imperial Government to be'exceedingly careful to avoid any active interference vnth the course which m this coti.ec* tioa the colonies may think it advisable in thejir interests to pursue. Foreign countries have their susceptibilities, but so also hare the colonies. The torcgoing is & very logical summary of the position, and while our conteraiporary's retn&rks are tempered by prudence, they also teem with conunonstnye.
