MANAWATU EVENING STANDARD Circutation 3.200 Copies Daily. MONDAY, JUNE 4, 1906. A NEW MOVEMENT.
Tsit: Ihty of Rest movement, started recently iu London, offers ji striking; indication of the spiritual trend of the rtCH- century. Confronted with the fact, that the hulk of the English people during the pa-st two decades has shown an increasing indifference to religion, the Church of England and the Nonconfornmis alike have for yersr* been vainly sc.dang|tu stem the decline m attendunee at places of worship. They have now joined forces, ami are about to make a strong united effort for the spiritual awakening of the nation. The movement hai been mkhtte.i in the most liberal spirit. Its aim is to make Sun. day a day of resi iu the very wtdeML sense. It therefore disclaims any denominational intent. It proclaims as an economic law that otie day n week without labour for everyone in a necessary condition to national wealth and. progress. And it announces as. its mission the education of popuhir opinion on the subject. The religious side of the movement is the
circumstance that it is based oq Biblical injunction. But it subordinates: the religious object to purely economic considerations. It hopes, of course, that once it has assured to all men and women nf every sort and class, without distinction,, a complete day of repose from their ordinary vocaftons I numv of them will be attracted to the churches. But it expressly leaves the work of recalling the spiritually apathetic to a sense of'their religious obi stations to oilier agencies discotivj neeied from the common movement. It has already met with a great measure of success. The lionum Catholic Church,' after some consideration, has tendered it* adhesion ito the undertaking,l. and thus every bar to corporate national ■ aetiou has been removed. ■' On 9th ' May a conference m«t an Gaxtoa: ilall. : We6» : telftHter, _ of the- f entire body of Christians ia Grj ;
