Eire in Dunedin.

— O (Per Press Association)

PTJNEPIN. This Day. One of the most disastrous fires that ever occurred in Punedin broke out a little after one this morning in fourstoreyed premises in Cumberland-street, owned by the New Zealand Hardware Cay. When the alarm was given the flames had a firm hold. Shooting out of the front they spread rapidly to the rear and for a time the wacer made no impression on the raging furnace within.

Some idea of the magnitude of the fire may be gathered from the fact that the flames shot up for a distance of over sixty feet above the parapet of the fourth storey. The efforts of the firemen were directed to saving a one-storey warehouse belonging to the Company on the northern side, and the Corporation's power house on the southern. Ultimately they were successful, but the former, which was heavily stocked with ironmongery, caught fire more than once and was greatly damaged by the falling walls of the main structure. Fortunately there was an absence of wind or the power house could not have been saved. Its destruction would have meant a serious loss to the Corporation. The emplyees of the Hardware Co. were back stocktaking last night till 9 o'clock, when they left everything safe. _ The fire was not completely got under till 3 a.m.
