(From Our Own Correspondent), t May 00. The enquiry into too origin of the fir® wntcb destroyed tbc residence of Mr G. A. Simpson was held yesterday after* noon before the coroner, Mr A. Fraaer. The following were the juryMes«r« : P. Hennc*sy {foreman), G. li. Stile#. I*. :E. Jenks, C. h. Barnard, and A. W. ; Ikadley. Evidence -was given by Mr and Mrs Simpson, and by Messrs Baker, Robinson, Webb, and Hunt, these hav« ing been fir*t on the of t thw fire. The jury considered there was no evidence to account Sor the cause of the fire, and a verdict was given to thai effect. | The Tonnis Club bail, which wih postponed from last week, will bo held | to-night in the Public Hail. The ladle# of the Anglican Church sewing guild intend a!«o to hold a bazaar and sale if work in the Poo lie Hall on. the 6th and 7th June, in order to pay off some of the debt on the new vicarage. The ladies are making elaborate preparation# for this event, which promises to be highly successful. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Foxton Literary and 'jDebating Society was held lafet evening m the Temperance Hall. A good number of memhern were present, and Rev. H. F. Wilson was elected So the chair. It was decided to strike oft the names of several member,* who had not attended a sttliicieat number of times. The
' advisability of altering the place of | meeting was aUo but t!m matter was held over for next meeting. The subject for Ike evening was Car* lyle's *" Heroes and Hero WorsliipC" Mr W. E, Barnard read an exhaustive paper, dealing with the life and character of Carlylc, and the chief poiuts of interest in his. book. The,pa per wan ably written, and showed cndence of long study of the subject ou the part of the writer. Mr U. Moore aiso *ielivtrcd a brief speech on the first lecture in the book. Other members spoke on the subject, so that at times there was some interesting argument. The same sub ice t will bts continued next meeting, a lien papers «ill be read on different portions of the book, each member taking a separate »art.
