Tsii: deranseroent of the 'Frisco mail h«rvir.% conseijuent upon the disaster which overtook the Califorman eity* has had the effect of bringing into prominence ft new argument for the establishment of ari " All-red" service. It will be remembered that when the question was last under discussion, the Government was so situated that it was almost forced to make terms with the American company which controls the 'Frisco service. When the matter comes up for consideration next there will be some valuable «*i-idenee for submission to Parliament. The chief Government mail agent, Mr Lindsay, reports that the departing of the" earthquake" mail trout Vancouver last month raised the hopes of the commercial eominunity of that city that it would not be the last. Mr Lindsay further states that the journey from the port of Victoria to Auckland occupied the Moana 18 days *23 hours, which is quite as smart a voyage as the Oceanic Company's steamers have been doing recently to San Francisco. This is a powerful argument for the diversion of the mail service permanently from 'Frisco to Vancouver, and when we add the reason that so much h heard of— that it is m the best interests of the Empire to keep the Empire's trade as much as possible iu lir.tibh hands—the two are irresistible. Besides merchants weem to by of the opinion m Canada that an excellent mutual trade could be done between New Zealand and Western Canada. Recently a new line of steam service was established, but judging by the experience of the first steamer, the lJuecntaur, the results were not as en* eouragiug as was hoped. This vessel, it ts reported took only about -toO bales of hemp. Still with assistance the trade will no doubt improve. Indeed this is almost certain, judging by the statement* of the Canadian correspondent of the Daily Times, He 1 says it wi»l be quite possible that before long Canada may be taking New 1 Zealand's frozen meat. Canadians are already paying from 8d to lod per lb for their beef and are faced with the prospect of a further rise consequent upon the decrease of the grassing areas. The correspondent already quoted says: "Frozen meat is now coming to the Pacific coast. Let it be demonstrated that if can be brought inland to the cities of Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa j and thcr« will be found a demand for tons of it every week." Though he j sees that there would be a protest from

H* *«y»i would r*rraai» wh*r® It % leave room for many fchoasaotl* of ton# of New Zealand mutton ia oar chic#, Even a* a luxury our people would pay h4 U* IDd per tb for it/' The correspondent farther say* thai the tVade in frozen meat could be fosterW simply by organisation ami the expenditure of capital, and he suggests that the International Exhibitfem, might be made of some service m introducing the po<»ibilitics of the trade io Canad tan visitors and commercial men* There i* much to btt said favour o£ developing trade relations with Canada, both on the {purely commercial ground and that of sentiment, and we shall be surprised if the Government do not, in this matter carry out the settled policy of being continually on the alert to capture new market#.

Sineiair, said he had been asked to compliment the Coroner upon the speedy manner hi which the mass ot evidence had been dealt with by the typiste, Mi*s Seaulan. The jury expressed entire approval of the innovation and hoped that in future enquiries of the kind the typewriter won id always be employed to expedite the taking of evidence. All the other*, whose misfortune it was to have to " sit out" the eight hours for which the enquiry lasted, heartily concurred in the foreman's remarks.
Contrasting the " boom" prices of land in the vicinity of Wellington with the values ruling m the outskirts of much greater cities, Mr G. H. Lightfoot, secretary of the Wellington Carpenters' Union, mentioned an intercsting fact. A couple of years ago, he said, he bought a section of land, with a 50ft frontage and a good depth, in Ciiterham Valley, a pretty .suburb of London, sixteen miles out from the metropolis. Ihe land faced a good street, and was backed by a reserve on which no buildings could be erected. This site was only a minute's walk from the station connected with a tast, cheap railway sen-ice, and yet, with ail the advantages:, the purchase price was onlyj£2 a foot. When Mr Lightfoot left England seven or eight months ago he sold out at the comparatively low figure of £2 10s a foot, a mere trifle when set against tbe sums disbursed for some suburban properties near Wellington.
The combined committee*, set upm connection with the children's fancy dress ball on June 18th, met yesterday, a large number being present. Mr I). Pringl© was in the chair. It was decided to erect a large marquee on the ground adjoining the Zealandia Hall for use as a supper room, The stage in the hall will bo reserved for the fancy dances, while the children's dances and the grand march will take place on the floor. Spectators m the gallery will thus be given a goad opportunity to see the whole perform, ante. Messrs Colliagwood, Shorty and Mathieson were appointed a Door Committee, and Messrs fchorti. Pringle, and Mcl'arren a Floor Committee. Mr Sharp will hare charge in the marquee, while the general arrangements wen; left in the hands of Mr H. MulJer. The oiler of Messrs Kitchen and Mey. rick to supply a band was accepted with many thanks.

It is stated that these gentry are lying low until the Exhibition opens, so as not to attract the attention of the police.
