The Late Mr Saunders.
The !New Zealand Times says the late ■iVlr .Joseph Saunders,'who web sixty-two years o{ »ge, was born in Wellington ana placed no inconsiderable port in (fie development of the place. He was the owner of considerable property in the ihorndon district, and "Saunders' lane" is better known as such to old residents m and around Tinakori road than by the new nunae, Little George street. In the scare times, between 1868 and 1865, Mr Saunders was a member of the Welliugton Defence Corps a militia that was called out to defend the town from a threatened attack by the natives. As president of the Wellington Rowing Club, which position he held up to the time of his death, he evinced a keen interest in acquatic sport, an interest that was, pe'haps, the residue °f his connection with the sport when a boating regatta in Wellington was something more than it is to-day, now that the recreative attractions are so varied. He leaves a widow (a daughter of the late Mr James McGee, formerly of the Goth regiment!, and a large family. The eldest son, Mr Edward Saunders, was a member of one of the South Af riean contingents. The others are Messrs Joseph and Charles Saunders, of Palmerston North, and Messrs Huntley, Percy, Sidney and Gordon Saunders. Of the two danghters, the eldest is in a Melbourne convent, and the second, Miss Annie Saunders, resides at home. Mr Saunders was a plain, straight-going man of many sterling qualities, and his unexpected end will be regretted by many in Wellington and other parts of the colony.
