Sporting Notes.

TBr "Gebaixt." Just before the start of the Wanganui Steeplechase the jumper Miss was purchased from Mr; J. Anderson, of Palmerston, by Mr E. Stevenson, another local owner, for £350 and another £o0 out »f the first win. The mare ran in her new owner's interest in the big event, and up to three-quarters of a mile from home showed every sign of holding a winning chance. A mistake at the bluegum spar fence, however, took all the steam and sting out of her, and she eventually finished fourth. It is more ihan probable Miss King will remain in her present quarters at Feilding. I learn on the best of authority that j nothing definite has yet been decided upon with reference to the reported departure of Black Reynard, Kremlin, Apiti, Shrapnel and Hutana for Australia. The whole question is still at an indefinite stage, and in any case there was no foundation for the statement when it was first made. It will doubtless have been noticed that all the horses mentioned have been nominated for the j Otaki and Hawke's Bay- meetings in June.

| Hutana is now running in the joint interests of Messrs D. Thompson and 0. Hammond. The big jumper is in A. Hall's charge at Feilding and never looked better than he does at present. Kaharoa, who was fired some time back, is coming on well, and probably will be put in commission again at an early date. Hipporangi broke down at the recent Marlborough meeting, and on returning to Palmerston was sent home. She will, in all probability, be sent to the stud. Hippodrome and Gold Dredge, two stable mates, have also departed" from headquarters. The former has been leased by bis owner, and is now in W. Trask's stable at Otaki, while Gold Dredge has gone to Feilding. T. Quinlivan, senr., is thus left with only Miss Lancelot and the Merriwee-Fleefcwing filly in the boxes. Eurus will probably never experience in his future racing career a streak of luck like that which ended in his winning the Wanganui Steeplechase. 'Ihere is no doubt whatever that when Defoe ran off at the last jump he had his field well beaten. One had only to see him pulling double at the finish to be convinced of that. There was a chance, too, that Playfair, who ran off with Defoe would also have been in the reckoning, a suggestion that is strengthened by his victory oyer Phas&onitis and Nadador the next day.

The Marton B.C. has decided to enlarge its totalisator house before its spring meeting, .and also effect other improvements in the paddocK. It has been practically decided to purchase a Saywell starting machine. Mr Saywell's resignation as starter to the club was received at the last meeting, and another will be appointed at the annual meeting. The club has decided to fence the course right round. The tracks are in splendid | condition at present, the drainage work carried out last year having proved most effective in its operation. Owners and trainers are i-eminded that acceptances for the Otaki meeting close this evening. Before the Winter Oats at Wanganui Jolly Friar was sold by Mr Cotter to Mr H. Hodges for £200. The horse subsequently won the race (£120) for his new owner. At Wanganui on Friday the hurdler Cassiopea was passed in at auction at £32. Solution has been nominated for the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps to be run at Randwick in September, and the Caulfield Cup, Toorak Handicap and Melbourne Cup, run later.
