Ahe lly-wheel of a 1.2 li.p. engine at Aft right and Carter's sawmill, near Utiku, Hew to pieces on Friday and a fragment struck the mill engine-driver, Harrison, on lhc back of the head. He was taken to Mangaweka and a doctor wired for. who met him at the station. It was a marvel he was not killed, for portions of the wheel ilew right past the breast bench. As it was, he received a nasty scalp wound some two inches long, which bled a great deil. An extraordinary adventure befell a gentleman who went to a Paris dentist to have a tooth drawn. The latter was mad, and announced that he would extract all his patient's teeth, enforcing his threat with a revolver. When eight teeth had been wrenched out, the madman said: " That will do. \ou have beeu very quiet. Half a crown, if you please.". The gentleman paul at once, staggered on', of the room, and went to the nearest police station. Iwo policeman were shot before the madman could l>e overpowered. l't is the opinion of Mr "Wilson, decretary of Agriculture at Washington, that in a few years crop iailures in America will be comparatively unknown. He says that scientific methods of farming are grappling successfully with almost every dillieulty. Experts have studied the conditions to such advantage that even deserts will be compelled to yield a harvest, and he predicted tha' within ten years the acreage yield of the Lnited States «i be literally doubled. The increase would be due entirely to the ad*anc«. in the farmers' education, Among the prisoners before the Supreme Court at Wellington was f Tanara, a Maori lad, who spoke fluently, and had P '; iu!e(l . It appears that a doctor gave him a tablet for external application, but instead of applying it as directed, the patient thought that it was meant to be taken internally, and consequently swallowed it, with the result that he had'to be removed to the Hospital. Communications have been sent out to the local bodies which have not so far promised monetary assistance to the proposed Manawatu-Rangitikei Court at the Exhibition asking them to receive a deputation from the local executive on the subject. Messrs Hurley and Jack are the gentlemen in whose hands the matter has been placed. Messrs W. Beck and C. Carter, J's.P., presided at the Police Court this morning. A youth named Hugh Noonan was charged that on May 26th he broke and entered the Occidental Hotel by night with intent to commit a crime therein. On the application of the police he was remanded until Thursday morning. Bail was allowed, self in £50 and two sureties in £25 each. On Sunday evening, says the Star, a young man was knocked down by a inotor car on the corner of Denbighstreet, Feilding. The car was driven at a rapid rate around the corner, and as no warning sound was given there was no time for escape. The front wheel passed over the young man's chest and he was dragged some distance by the back wheel. It is fortunate that he escaped with no more serious injury than severe bruises and ruined clothes. Two of the Royal Horticultural Society's medals will be presented by the Manawatu A. and P. Society at the coming Winter Show. One will go to the best collection of keeping apples (six distinct varieties), and the other to the best collection of yegetables. The medals are just to hand from London, where they were manufactured. They are of a handsome and massive design, and are made of. solid silver. Already the competitions have attracted considerable interest and a good show is expected. A meeting of the Carterton Chamber of Commerce Council was held last week. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce forwarded the Government's reply to the recent deputation on railway mattes It was resolved that the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce be recommended That steps be taken to arrange for a joint deputation to wait on the Minister for Railways (Sir J.
