Results of the Census
Progress in Palmerston. The local census enumerator, Mr Shortt, has now completed the census leturns for the Kairanga County;■ including the Palmerston Borough, and hopes to get the figures for the Mahawatu County out to-morrow. It will be seen that*the- total population of the Borough is now 10,243, a slight increase on the figures first given to us for publication. The males are certainly in the majority, the figures being, males 5245, females 4998. There are in all 75 Chinese resident in Palmerston. Of this number three are women. There were 28 buildings under con-' struction when the census was taken. The tables below indicate the manner in which the buildings and inhabitants are distributed. For the purposes of the census Palmerston was divided into four districts, the dividing lines being Main street and Fitzherbert and Rangitikei streets.The north-eastern or Hokowhitu corner was numbered 1, the south-eastern or Linton street corner numbered 2, the south-western or Taonui street corner numbered 3, and the north-western or hospital corner numbered 4. The - inhabitants in each of . these divisions are as follows: — Males. Females. Tl. No. 1 ... ... 1384 1379 2763 No. 2 945 899 1844 No. 3 1409 1226 2635 No. 4 1507 1494 3001 Total ... 5245 4998 10,243 The dwellings are shown as follows: —No. 1 district, 577 ; No. 2 district, 389 ; No. 3 district, 545; No. 4 district, 637. Total, 2,148. The total population of the Kairanga County, exclusive of Palmerston, is 3681. There are 2079 males and 1602 females. Kdiranga has 778 inhabited buildings, 50 uninhabited, and only 3 in process of construction. Details of the inhabitants in the ridings are as follows : — Males. Females. Total 831. Palmerston North now having a population of 10,000 is entitled to nn M.H.R. all to itself. This is one of the matters which will engage the attention of the Representative Commission, which, after every census, has to deal with the redistribution of seats.
