Mr Selfe, Now Zealand manager of Eastern Extension Co., atate# that the Recorder picked up the New Zealand end of one of the broken cables at 0.43 p.m. Tbo Recorder experienced severe weather. A fierce gale blew for thirtysix hours and the ship's gear w&» washed about, but no one was injured. The Recorder ia holding the cable end till four in the morning, when she proceed* to flplice and join the two end#. Mr Selfo anticipates that the cable will be working to-morrow morning. Since the break in the cable, cablegrams have been coming to the colony via the Doubtless Bay line. WELLINGTON, May 25. When the divorce unit of Jeremiah Stevenson v, Nellie Stevenson and Hasting* Russell co respondent, wo* called on at the Supreme Court to-day, counsel for respondent made an appli* cation to have the case heard in emuera. His Honor the Chief Justice said he had always laid down a rule that where children were concerned there ought to he no publication, and following the precedent laid down by Justice l)enniston, at Christchurch, he granted counsel's request. The inquest on the body of the lad Rowe (who died at Pet one after dropping on to his feet from a branch of a tree 0 feet above the ground) disclosed that death was due to a fracture of the base of the skull causing hemorrhage of the brain. The Acting-Premier lifts received a communication expressing (in pursuance of a resolution by the American Congress) the grateful appreciation of the Government and people of the United States for the aid eontributed by the Government rind people of New Zealand to the success of the Louisiana Exposition.
