Empire Day.
(By Electric Telegraph — Copyright). ; {Per Press Association.) SYDNEY. May 2-1. Empire Day was celebrated in the most unfavourable weather condition?. A soaking rain commenced early in the forenoon, just as the city was decking itself out, and continued without intermission all the day through. There waa slush underfoot, and the thousands of limp ilags combined to render tho outlook anything* but gay. An elaborate programme of outdoor events was completely spoiled and mostly abandoned. The gloomy weather, however, failed to damp the enthusiasm of indoor functions. The Governor and members of the Ministry and prominent citizens visited the city and suburban schools and delivered stirring addresses to the children. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 21. The Earl of Mcath, originator of the Empire Day celebration, cabled to the Acting Premier to-day, " Sister nations, rejoice!" The Hon. Hall Jones' reply was: " Your Empire message touches chords which vibrato and reciprocate throughout New Zealand."
