Mr Alfred Lyttelton, late Secretary to the Colonies, has been appointed chairman of the commission to enquire into the police administration of West End. In the House of Commons, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, replying to Sir Charles Dilke, said the Crown colonies would not .be specially represented at the Colonial Conference, but India would be represented. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman has stated that the Government considered the House of Lords acted unconstitutionally in rejecting the Aliens Bill merely because the Government did not take up the Bill. Forty-three funerals are postponed in consequence. The 'Frisco earthquake having delayed the mails, the Trinity College examinations throughout New Zealand are postponed to June 30. LONDON, May 22. Robert- Stewart, a prominent British resident, who acted as American ViceConsul at Batouru, has been murdered at his residence. The motive is supposed to be robbery. Received May 23, at 9.16 a.m. LONDON, May 22. The Grand Committee on Trade by 21 to 14 decided to impose the British load-line on foreign ships laden abroad for the United Kingdom. The Shipping Bill proposes to limit the load-line to ships leaving British ports. Received May 23, at 9.41 a.m. ST. PETERSBURG, May 22 A- bomb severely wounded Colonel Keller at Kalisz, in Poland. Great Britain demands from China £4000 as an indemnity in connection with the recent massacre of missionaries at Newcliang.
