The vacancies in Shearsby's stable have been filled bv a couple of horses from the Hon. W. W Johnston, Vasa,, a brown filly by Finland—Parera, a half sister to .ftljin and Pas Seul. Eljin has raced with some success in Australia, while Pas Seul's deeds are well known. The other is a bay filly by Birkenhead, from Balm, dam of Flamen and Highden. Both fillies show a lot ot quality, but if anything the former is the nicer of the two. They have been broken in and hacked and will be now prepared for early spring engagements. Sir Geraint is at present in the paddock and will spell until required for November engagements. Jeannie D'Arc is also practically spelling at Awapuni, as is also Sylvan Tide. He, with Kaharoa, who has been fired, is in J. Maher's charge. " Sid" Reid, the Carterton jockey, will probably run second to Jenkins in the Jist of winning riders for tho year. H6 has scored fifty-one wins this season. Heid is -uiiiy in h;"s second year as a jockey. Mr G. P. Donnelly's racing mare Queen's Messenger, in trying to negotiate a fence in a paddock at Ngatarawa (H. 8.), fell, and broke her back. She had to be destroyed. Cable advice has been recoived that an English-bred stallion, Sir Laddo, by Sir Hugo, sire of Sir Foote, from Golden Moments by Sheen from Memoir had been shipped per Paparoa for New Zealand on Saturday on account of the Manawatu Stud Company, Palmerston. Memoir was by St. Simon from Quiver and was a full sister in blood to Musket. She won the Oaks, the St. Leger, and the Lancashire Stakes and was a full sister to the noted mare La Fleche. The latter won fully £80,000 in stakes, including the Two Thousand Guineas, the Oaks and | St. Leger. She was eventually-sold as a brood mare for £20,000 to Sir Tatton Sykes. Sir Laddo will rant as the first high-bred horse that has been placed at the disposal of the breeders in the Manawatu district, and in a county that has proved so signally adapted to horsebreeding the importance and value of the purchase cannot be over-estimated. Sir Laddo will stand at 20 guineas and will be restricted to about fifteen mares outside the company's. Fully half of the fifteen subscriptions have been booked, The company has already about a dozen mares in their valuable property a few miles from Palmerston. A report states that Mr W. P. Crick
has been approached by people anxious to buy ColJarit. He was asked if he would consider an offer of 3000gs, but Mr Crick replied that it was useless to discuss price, as Collarit was not for sale. He appreciated a good horse as much as anyone else did, and, believing that he possessed one, intended to keep him, Golden Lily, by Multiform—Corolla who is now in West Australia, is to be retired to the stud, and will be mated with Le Yar, a son of Lochiel.
Kumours are afloat to the effect that Solution is to bo taken over to Australia in time for the A J.O. Spring Meeting. The Newmarket Handicap winner, Pendant, by Far Niente —Necklet, and Emir's sister Birida, by Wallace—Emmie, are among the mares that will probably be mated with Machine Gun in his first season at the stud. Says a southern writer :—Starshoot was not destined to carry Mr J. Buckley's colours for any great length of time, as the son of Eotchkiss has been sold to Mr S. Nettlefold, and will be taken to Australia in company with Melodeon and Savoury. Starshoot will, however, race in Mr Buckley's name at Oamaru, as delivery of the horse is not to be taken until after that gathering. A Oalifornian breeder and sportsman | has written to Mr A. Yuille, of Melbourne, expressing a desire to visit Australia, bringing with him three good i American-bred horses, and see how they will shape with the Australian horses. He is anxious to , learn when entries close for the Melbourne Cup and all the principal races, so that he may enter Ins horses. No doubt Australian sportsmen will give the plucky American a hearty welcorrle, and his horses every chance to display their merits.
