Shipping Companies Explain. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 21. Tho manager of the Union Company, seen to-day with reaped to tho cable about the Premier and tho Exhibition passenger trallio, said tho directors had had the matter in hand for somo months. Tho chicf prossuro on coastal traffic will bo betweon Lyttclton and Wellington, and hero tho Company is prepared to handle at least one thousand passengers per day. In reply to ft cable on Friday tho Premier was informed that tho Union Company intended to put tho Maheno ou for fclio Exhibition running. Sho can make three trips per month, an 3 as sho can carry 580 passengers sho bring 1,600 paasonjjers per month, in addition to the regular service of three steamers per week, two from Sydney and one from Melbourne, oach of which can carry 800 passengers, or, with tho Maheno, 5100 passengers per month. Tho Huddart Parker Co. will probably uso the now steamer Riverina, which has about tho same capacity as tho Maheno, ami will use a second special steamer if required. It is pointed imt that un no previous occasion has tho. company been unable to copc with tho traflic. Tho Union Company has had experience of tho New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, and Melbourne I and Tasmanian Exhibitions, and has aItVHVs provided accommodation in excess of requirements.
